MARKEY ANNOUNCES $18 MILLION FOR FORT COLLINS SMART GRID PROJECT
Recovery Act funding means more jobs for Northern Colorado
Washington,
Oct 27 -
Congresswoman Betsy Markey today announced that the City of Fort Collins will receive $18,101,263 to help fund Smart Grid technologies across the city.
“This is wonderful news for Northern Colorado,” said Rep. Markey. “Renewable energy is already advancing, thriving and growing in our state. This funding will help move Fort Collins’ own smart grid technology forward, which is leading the charge to modernize our country’s electrical grid. Investing in renewable energy technologies means new jobs for our communities and brings us one step closer to energy security and independence.”
The Recovery Act funds will go towards installing 79,000 smart meters and in-home demand response systems including in-home displays, smart thermostats and air conditioning and water heater control switches, automate transmission and distribution systems, and enhance grid security. The funding will provide all the smart meters and system integration upgrades that are needed by the FortZED Smart Grid Demonstration Project.
Today, the President announced a $3.4 billion investment in Smart Grid technology nationwide. This is the largest single Smart Grid modernization investment in U.S. history, funding a broad range of projects that will ease the nation’s transition to a smarter, stronger, more efficient and reliable electric system. The $3.4 billion are part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, and will be matched by industry funding for a total public-private investment worth over $8 billion.
